How to Develop Character Traits in Children

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”

Martin Luther King, Jr

Do you think good character traits are innate in children? Character building is crucial for developing good behavioral patterns in children. So, both parents and teachers have an immense role to play when it comes to developing character traits in children. As children spend most of their time in schools, they get many opportunities to learn valuable lessons by interacting with their peers and teachers.

In this blog, let’s see some of the character traits that can be developed in children.

Honesty

They say honesty is the best policy. Teaching children not to tell a lie even in the most challenging situations is essential. Children learn values by watching parent’s actions closely because they are their role models.

Integrity

Let the children learn the difference between right and wrong. Teach them to do the right thing in difficult situations. Integrity helps children to make the right decisions.

Respect

Children learn respect by watching their parents. Respect towards people is very important.  So, teach your children to always use kind and polite words with everyone they interact with.

Gratitude

This trait is much needed as it is a key to be blissful and thankful. A 2019 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies 1 reveals that gratitude is linked to happiness.

Patience

Parents can teach patience to their children by purposefully delaying some things for no reason. By having patience, your child can control their emotions and actions.

Confidence

Parents should take the lead to appreciate their children in the form of rewards. And that will make children feel good, thereby boosting their confidence.

Optimism

During difficult times, teach your children to see the positive side of things. Help your child to face any failure with an optimistic mindset.

At our nursery school in Bangalore, through our program PUPA (Prior Understanding of Pupil Attributes), our teachers understand their children and their character traits even before the academic year has started. Teachers interact with each parent individually to know the child in-depth, meet with each parent which helps them to interact with the child efficiently. Our teachers keep observing child’s progress, thereby gaining a prior understanding of each student’s attributes. Parents also play an important role in shaping their children.

Our curriculum is not only limited to enhancing our children’s physical and cognitive skill development but also their emotional and personal development. Our activities are also built in such a way that kids learn to differentiate between positive traits and negative traits.
